"We must be good citizens – support good works and charities..." – reads Our Credo, a simple, one-page document that has guided responsible actions to our customers, our employees, the community and our stockholders. For more than 60 years, Our Credo has created a shared value system across the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies.
The DePuy Franchise’s long-standing dedication to corporate and social responsibility has focused on making tangible differences in the lives of people around the globe. Examples of “Credo in Action” efforts can be seen in such activities as company-sponsored initiatives, partnerships with community organizations including United Way and Red Cross Blood Drives, employee-driven individual volunteer efforts, and environmental excellence.
The Environment
The DePuy Franchise facilities have had a long history of leadership in environmental performance. Specifically, in the early 1990s the DePuy companies in Massachusetts eliminated from their facilities freon degreasing, and moved from chemical heat-treating to nitrogen inerted ovens. This action resulted in the New Bedford Facility receiving an award from the Massachusetts Governor in 1994, for the Toxic Use Reduction Program as part of the Buzzards Bay Toxics Use/Discharge Reduction.
In 2001, the DePuy companies in Massachusetts won an Environmental Excellence in Performance Award from Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Environmental Affairs. Also, in 2001 the DePuy company facilities in Massachusetts and Indiana achieved ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification, and became Charter Members of the EPA Performance Track Program. DePuy Orthopaedics also joined the Indiana Environmental Stewardship Program. DePuy Orthopaedics received the WW EHS Sustainability Award in 2006 and the facility will soon be honored by the Indiana Water Environment Association for their project to reduce copper discharge in plant wastewater.
Product Donation Program
An active Product Donation Program is in place at the DePuy companies which includes donation of product for specific humanitarian missions to third world countries as well as to worldwide humanitarian aid organizations who respond to natural disasters recovery efforts such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
In addition, the companies respond to a variety of philanthropic needs including: cash contribution requests, support to healthcare provider fundraisers, a specialized Patient Assistance Program, donations to humanitarian missions and support for medical responses to natural disasters.
Mentorship Opportunities
Mentors can have a tremendous impact on the lives of students, opening their eyes to career possibilities they might not otherwise have known about and opening doors that might have otherwise remained closed. Possibilities and opportunities like this are behind the success of a local Mentor Program run by the Taunton Area School to Career, Inc. (TASC), which counts the DePuy companies in Massachusetts among its long-time supporters.
For a number of years, Junior Achievement, a worldwide organization whose mission goes far beyond teaching about business to preparing students to understand, participate, and succeed in our global economy, has relied on DePuy company employees in Massachusetts to teach its courses during the school day for Junior Achievement of South Massachusetts (JASM).
FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, was founded in 1989 to excite students about engineering and technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition is designed to inspire students to become engineers by giving them real world experience working with professional engineers to design and build a robot, which are then entered in regional and national competitions that take place around the United States as well as in Canada and Israel. The FIRST Lego Robotics Competition in Warsaw, IN supported by DePuy Orthopaedics began in the fall of 2001 with a single team at Eisenhower Elementary School. Since then, the program has grown to include chapters at thee additional local elementary schools - Washington, Lincoln, and Madison.
Local Community Support
In the same way that the DePuy Franchiseis driven to improve the quality of patients’ lives, the United Way strives to improve lives by focusing on issues that impact the entire community and working with people and organizations to identify and resolve these issues. DePuy company donations – through pledges, volunteering and company fundraising activities – make their work possible.
The Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College arose out of a meeting between leaders from the Warsaw orthopaedic community and the president of Grace College & Seminary, to discuss the possibility of establishing a major event center that would benefit the Warsaw–Winona Lake community. These companies based in Warsaw have given not only their leadership to the project, they have also contributed $3.25 million toward the Center's $9.1-million cost. The 56,000-square-foot facility is designed to provide an important cultural centerpiece for Warsaw and Winona Lake, IN, to provide a valuable resource for the business community; to serve the needs of Grace and its students and to strengthen the partnership between Grace and the community-at-large.
International Support
U.K.-based DePuy International channels the spirit and enthusiasm of DePuy employees through involvement in specific “Business in the Community” projects.
Open Arms, Malawi is a signature International Project for DePuy International and an important phase has already been completed. In May 2006, 40 DePuy International volunteers from Europe, Middle East and Africa traveled to Malawi to help in the construction of feeding and nursing stations in townships and rural areas of Malawi.
Several DePuy International volunteers from the Leeds facility spent time redecorating hallways and classrooms at the local Hugh Gaitskell School, in addition to donating funds for the purchase of IT equipment and books.
Although the partnership between Leeds Organic Growers and DePuy International is only four years old, the organization is a local initiative involving residents and partner organizations to provide a sustainable community resource. The group grows a wide variety of crops with the aim of encouraging community involvement in allotment gardening. As a result, areas of urban decay are being turned into garden and green zones whilst developing community involvement and encouraging children to become involved in food production and management. |
